STAFF SERVICES BUREAU
The Administration/Staff Services Bureau is responsible for providing support services for the effective functioning and operation to entire police department. The Administration/Staff Services Bureau consists of the following departments: Community Police/Bike Unit, Training Division, Agency Accreditation, Professional Standards Unit, Property and Records Division, I.T. Services, Alarm Unit, School Resource Officers, and the department’s Jobs-In Blue program.

Training is an ongoing process for all police officers and civilian staff. The Training Division is responsible for ensuring that the officers of the Township of Union Police Department have the most up to date training including in-service training, roll call training and our field training program. The Training Division is responsible for developing, scheduling and implementing all in-service training for the department. Additionally, the Training Division ensures that all recruits receive appropriate Academy Training in order to meet the requirements of the Police Training Commission.

Officers in the agency participate in continuing education programs and instruction on a daily basis as part of their career advancement and service to the community. Officers receive in-service training prepared by the Training Division as well as attending classes at police academies. The Township Of Union Police Department strives to provide our officers and civilian staff with the most updated, advanced, and efficient means of receiving training on changes in law and procedures as well as the changing needs of the community. The Training & Staff Services Bureau is responsible for :
Recruit Training: The training bureau conducts initial training programs for police recruits. This training covers fundamental aspects of policing, such as law enforcement procedures, firearms training, defensive tactics, and communication skills. It also introduces recruits to the department's policies and procedures.
Basic Law Enforcement Training: Recruits are instructed in various aspects of the law, including criminal law, constitutional law, and local ordinances. They learn how to conduct investigations, make arrests, and handle evidence.
Physical Fitness and Defensive Tactics: Recruits are subjected to physical fitness training to ensure they are in good physical condition to handle the rigors of police work. They are also taught defensive tactics, including handcuffing techniques, self-defense, and use of force protocols.
Firearms Training: This includes instruction on the safe and effective use of firearms, marksmanship, and firearm maintenance. Recruits are typically required to pass rigorous qualifications to demonstrate their proficiency with firearms.
Community Policing and Ethics: Training emphasizes the importance of community policing, cultural sensitivity, and ethical decision-making. This is to ensure officers understand the importance of building positive relationships with the communities they serve and to maintain the highest standards of professionalism.
Emergency Response Training: Officers are trained in responding to various emergency situations, including active shooter scenarios, high-speed pursuits, and disaster response.
Legal Procedures and Report Writing: Recruits learn how to document their actions accurately and in compliance with legal requirements. This includes report writing and court testimony preparation.
Crisis Intervention and De-escalation: Training on how to handle individuals in crisis, including those with mental health issues, is a crucial part of modern police training. De-escalation techniques are emphasized to minimize the use of force.
Technology and Equipment Training: Officers are taught to use and maintain their equipment, including body-worn cameras, radios, and other technology used in modern law enforcement.
Continuing Education: In addition to initial training, officers may undergo regular in-service training to stay updated on new laws, techniques, and equipment.

Legal and Ethical Standards: Recruits are instructed on their legal authority, as well as their responsibilities and obligations. This includes learning about civil rights, due process, and the limits of police power.
Cultural Competency and Diversity Training: Police training often includes instruction on interacting with a diverse population, respecting individual rights, and avoiding racial or cultural bias.
The Police Training Bureau play a crucial role in shaping the professionalism and conduct of law enforcement officers. They are designed to ensure that officers are not only well-prepared for their roles but also capable of upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law in their communities.
