FIREARMS IDENTIFICATION CARD

PERMIT TO PURCHASE A HANDGUN

Requirements for obtaining a Firearms Identification Card and Permit to Purchase a Handgun in New Jersey are quite rigorous and vary depending on each individual’s situation. Please refer to the New Jersey State Police website at www.njsp.org for further information.

Applicants who submit applications after October 1, 2020 will no longer receive a carbon copy handgun permit. All permits will be issued electronically as E-Permits through the Firearms Application and Registration System (FARS). Beginning April 1, 2021, all Firearms Identification Cards will also be issued electronically through FARS.

Purchase Permits are valid for 180 days. Only 1 handgun may be purchased within a 30 day period, unless an exemption is applied for.
Firearm ID Card issues after October 25, 2022 must be renewed on the tenth calendar year following its date of issuances.
Firearm Identification photos must comply with all state requirements (i.e. passport style - light background, no sunglasses or hat)
If you are reapplying, a 212a Form needs to be completed (must know your SBI #). You do not have to be fingerprinted again, list your SBI # and you will be directed to complete a 212a form.

Firearms Application and Registration System (FARS)

ALL applicants must visit the website https://njportal.com/NJSP/FARS.
Upon clicking the orange ‘Online S.T.S. 033 Form’ button, type in the ORI number NJ0201900. The ORI number MUST be entered correctly. Failure to enter the proper ORI number will result in your application having to be voided.
You can complete the online application utilizing a smartphone, mobile device, laptop, or desktop computer. During the application process, you will be asked to provide the email addresses of two (2) reputable references. Please advise your references that they will be sent a questionnaire via email and to answer the questions as soon as possible to help expedite the process. Please make sure the information provided is accurate (i.e. email address), as inaccurate information will result in delay.
Fees (Non-refundable):
$50 for Initial Firearms ID Card (replacement/change of address cards have no charge) and $25 per handgun purchase permit. Once your application is submitted, you will be contacted by this agency to submit payment before your application will be processed. Application fees are non-refundable, but if an application is withdrawn due to incomplete information, you will not be asked for payment again.
You will be contacted by a Township of Union Police Department representative when your Firearms ID card is ready.
The online application is applicant driven. Please ensure that you have entered the best phone numbers and email addresses for yourself and your references. Applications will be reviewed in the order which they are received. You will be contacted once your application is approved or denied. Do not contact us for status updates; you will be contacted regarding any issues and/or the disposition of you application.

The falsification of any information on any application or related document is a crime of the third degree under N.J.S. 2C: 39-10.c.

After submitting the application, you will be contacted by The Township of Union Police regarding additional application fees.

Fees include: $150 to The Township of Union and $68 to New Jersey State Police
Permits are Valid for a two year period
