BLUE ENVELOPE PROGRAM
The Township of Union Police Department is proud to partner with Union County and local municipalities to provide the “Blue Envelope Program” to motorists with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The “Blue Envelope Program” seeks to bring comfort, clarity, and transparency to Union County motorists with ASD who may be confused concerning the procedures associated with law enforcement encounters on motor vehicle stops.
The “Blue Envelope Program” will encourage Union County residents to provide vital motorist and additional emergency contact information to be used by first responders to streamline any law enforcement or additional first responder encounters. One side of the envelope provides motorist contact information, whether the motorist is verbal or nonverbal, clear directions for the motorist and/or passenger where to keep the envelope, what to do with your hands during a motor vehicle stop, advisement concerning the use of police flashlights, strobes, and/or sirens, and how to communicate with first responders. The other side of the envelope provides concise and specific directions and advisements to law enforcement personnel or additional first responders to assist motorists and/or passengers with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
This program is completely voluntary, but extremely beneficial to our officers and first responders in the event an emergency arises. “The Blue Envelope Program” is a first come, first served basis due to a limited supply. If interested in participating in the program, residents are advised to pick up the envelope at the front desk of Headquarters.
